Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy upon him) said: "If people find sufficiency in worldly life, you should find sufficiency in Allah; if they are joyful about worldly life, you should be joyful about Allah; if they find companionship with their loved ones, you should find companionship with Allah; and if they get acquainted with their rulers and leading ones and seek closeness to them to win glory and sublimity, you should get acquainted with Allah and seek His love to win the supreme glory and sublimity."
Abu Sulaymān said: "Blissful is he who takes one sound step whereby he seeks nothing but Allah ."
Come to the Paradise of Eden
Our first homes, and therein is the encampment.
And come to their gardens and tents
And come to a life that never becomes boring.
In a Hadīth reported by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has ninety-nine names; whoever memorizes them will enter Paradise. And indeed Allah is Witr (Only One), and He loves the Witr (odd number)." [Narrated by Al-Bukhāri and Muslim - this is the wording of Muslim -]
Our Lord, Glorified be He, is One, and there is no partner or equal to Him. Rather, He is the One God, the Eternal Refuge, Who neither begets nor is He begotten, and there is none comparable to Him.
Our Almighty Lord is the sole Possessor of the attributes of perfection and the traits of majesty.
Our Lord, glorified be He, is the Only One in His lordship, divinity, attributes, and actions. No one is comparable, similar, or equal to Him, given His all-inclusive perfection; Exalted is His Majesty. {There is nothing like unto Him; He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.} [Surat ash-Shūra: 11] {and there is none comparable to Him.} [Surat al-Ikhlās: 4] {Do you know anyone equal to Him?} [Surat Maryam: 65] {So do not set up rivals to Allah while you know.} [Surat al-Baqarah: 22]
Whoever acknowledges it will submit and humble himself to Him, Exalted be He, and love Him, hope for His bounty, believe in His Oneness, rely upon Him, turn to Him in repentance, and sincerely devote his worship to Him. Indeed, Allah Almighty did not create us except for this purpose: {I have not created the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.} [Surat adh-Dhāriyāt: 56] This is to devote worship to Him alone.
All others are Shaf‘ (even-numbered). They are part of the creation and can only be stable and upright when they are in pairs: {And We have created everything in pairs, so that you may take heed.} [Surat adh-Dhāriyāt: 49] And because people are in need of one another; {and We have raised some of them above others in ranks.} [Surat az-Zukhruf: 32]
They may even reach the extent of relying upon created beings and forgetting the Creator and loving them as they should love Allah or more. So, their hearts turn from the Creator to the created beings! {And among people, there are some who take others as equals to Allah: they love them as they should love Allah.} [Surat al-Baqarah: 165]
Hearts are naturally inclined to love anyone who does good to them, and so the devil approaches therefrom.
Here Allah Almighty warned humankind against falling into Shirk (polytheism)—knowingly or unknowingly—such as taking a loved one as a lord or an intercessor. Allah Almighty says: {So do not set up rivals to Allah while you know.} [Surat al-Baqarah: 22] Allah Almighty also says: {Or have they taken besides Allah others as intercessors? Say: "Even though they have no power nor do they understand?"} [Surat az-Zumar: 43]
From the verse that reads: {Say: "He is Allah, the One"} [Surat al-Ikhlās: 1] stems the rule of outward and inward Imān. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) reminded his Ummah of this rule, saying: "And He is Witr and He loves the Witr" i.e., Allah Almighty is One, with no partner or equal to Him.
Allah's love for Witr - which is Tawhīd (monotheism) - is apparent in many of the verbal and act-related worships; the obligatory prayers are five, and Qiyām al-Layl is concluded with Witr; washing is Witr; the number of times in purification is Witr; shrouding the deceased person is Witr; asking for Allah's forgiveness after the obligatory prayers is Witr; as well as many Dhikrs.
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) would also observe Witr in all his affairs. It is reported that he would take seven dried dates in the morning and used to take three breaths while drinking water.
Part of Allah's love for Witr is that He has ninety-nine excellent names, and whoever memorizes them will enter Paradise.
To You, my Lord, I direct my hopes
So, hear my supplication and show mercy to me, in my weakness
Do not leave me to those who provide me with no protection
And be my Guarantor, for You are the Sufficient Guarantor
O Allah, we ask You by Your name Al-Witr to admit us into Paradise and save us from Hellfire.
