Al-Hasīb (The Ever-Reckoner)

Ja‘far al-Sādiq (may Allah have mercy upon him) said: “I wonder how a person may ever be fearful and not flee to the verse that says: {Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.} [Surat ĀI-‘Imrān: 173] I heard Allah say thereafter: {So they returned with favor from Allah and bounty, no harm having touched them.} [Surat Ᾱl-‘Imrān: 174]

And I wonder how a person may be distressed and not flee to the verse that says: {There is no god but You; Glorified are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.} [Surat al-Anbiyā’: 87] I heard Allah say thereafter: {So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.} [Surat al-Anbiyā’: 88]

And I wonder how a person may be subject to a cunning plot and not flee to the verse that says: {And I entrust my affair to Allah. Indeed, Allah is All-Seeing of [His] slaves.} [Surat Ghāfir: 44] as I heard Allah say thereafter: {So Allah protected him from the evils they plotted.} [Surat Ghāfir: 45]”

If you become helpless and find no way and no hope, having lost all the means, then say: Allah is Sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs!

If life becomes tough and stressful for you and you fall into distress, then call out: Allah is Sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs! Soon Allah’s support, help, and relief will come to you! {So they returned with favor from Allah and bounty, no harm having touched them.} [Surat Ᾱl-‘Imrān: 174]

Allah Almighty introduces Himself to His servants as the One Sufficient for them. He says: {And Allah suffices as Ever-Reckoner.} [Surat an-Nisā’: 6] He also says: {Surely Allah has been Ever-Reckoner over everything.} [Surat an-Nisā’: 86]

Allah Almighty is the Ever-Reckoner.

Our Lord is Sufficient for all His servants in everything they need, be it bringing benefit or warding off harm.

His sufficiency is:

1. General sufficiency that encompasses all creatures, as He brings them into existence, gives them their sustenance, and provides them with everything needed for the purpose behind their creation. {He Who gave everything its form and then guided it.} [Surat Taha: 50]

2. Special sufficiency, which is particularly given to His monotheistic servants, as He supports and empowers them and defends them against all that is unpleasant. {O Prophet, sufficient for you is Allah and for whoever follows you of the believers.} [Surat al-Anfāl: 64]

Our Lord - Glorified and Exalted - is the Ever-Reckoner Who will hold all His servants accountable for their deeds on the Day of Judgment and recompense them accordingly. Nothing is hidden from Him, and even an atom’s weight in the heaven or the earth does not escape His knowledge! {And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as Reckoners.} [Surat al-Anbiyā’: 47]

He takes care of you during adversities!

If someone is intimidated by other than Allah, then says, “Allah is Sufficient for me,” He will save and support him.

Ibrāhīm (Abraham) (peace be upon him) was thrown into the fire and he said, “Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs!” As as a result, Allah made the fire cool and peace for him.

And when our Messenger (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were threatened by the armies of disbelief and paganism, they said: {Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs. So they returned with favor from Allah and bounty, no harm having touched them. And they pursued the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.} [Surat Āl-‘Imrān: 173-174]

Allah is the Ever-Reckoner to Whom His servants extend their hands at the latter part of the night, imploring Him to fulfill their needs, remove their distress, and guide them.

Both the strong and the weak are in His Hand, your health is in His Hand, your wife is in His Hand, those under your authority are in His Hand, your sustenance is in His Hand, kings are in His Hand, oppressors are in His Hand, and your enemy is in His Hand!

You just have to resort to Him and say: Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs!

Stick to it!

“Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs” is the key to relief and the door to happiness. {So they returned with favor from Allah and bounty, no harm having touched them. And they pursued the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.} [Surat Āl-‘Imrān: 174] If you fear from illness, loss in your business, poverty, an oppressor, or an enemy, say: Allah is Sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs!

If a woman feels afraid at the time of childbirth or fears for her child or herself, let her say: Allah is Sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs! The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever says in the morning and in the evening, ‘Hasbiyallāhu la ilāha illa huwa ‘alayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa rabb al-‘arsh al-‘azhīm (Allah is Sufficient for me; there is no god but Him; I rely upon Him; and He is the Lord of the Magnificent Throne)’ seven times, Allah will suffice him against whatever concerns him from the affairs of the worldly life and the Hereafter.” [Ibn al-Sunni and Abu Dāwūd as Mawqūf] [Al-Arnā’ūt: authentic chain of narration]

This statement means:

O Lord, I resort to You, seek Your refuge and help against what I fear from, and rely upon You; indeed, You are Sufficient for me and the source of my hope and refuge! {Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil.} [Surat an-Naml: 62]

As you know that Allah is Sufficient for you and the Ever-Reckoner, then do not present your needs to anyone but Him!

He is the Ever-Sufficient in protection and defense for His slaves.

For the safety of the road!

As the believer knows that Allah will hold him accountable for all his actions, great and small, that nothing whatsoever is hidden from Him, and that the reckoning is not difficult for the Creator, the Ever-Reckoner, he becomes constantly prepared and heedful of his Lord in all his conditions. {Then they are returned to Allah, their true Lord. Unquestionably, to Him is the judgment, and He is the swiftest of Reckoners.} [Surat al-An‘ām: 62]

‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: “I heard the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) say in one of his prayers: ‘O Allah, subject me to an easy reckoning!’ I said: ‘O Prophet of Allah, what is the easy reckoning?’

He said: ‘That He looks into his book and pardons him. Indeed, whoever gets questioned regarding the reckoning on that Day, O ‘Ā’ishah, will be ruined.’” [Narrated by Ahmad] [Sahīh (Authentic)]

‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Hold yourself accountable before you are held accountable and weigh your deeds before they are weighed for you. Get prepared for the greatest presentation. That Day, you will be presented for judgment; nothing of you will be left hidden.”

Al-Qurtubi (may Allah have mercy upon him) said, “A righteous person said, ‘This is a book; your tongue is its pen; your saliva is its ink; and your organs are its papers. You are the one dictating to your angel scribes. Nothing is added thereto or omitted therefrom. If you ever deny anything therein, the witness against you regarding this matter will be from you.’” {Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as a reckoner.} [Surat al-Isrā’: 14]

A Reminder!

In the Hereafter, there will be a tribunal in which rights will be returned to those to whom they are due. As there will be no money on that Day, good and bad deeds will be the basis of settlement. Everyone will be in desperate need even to a single good deed in his record.

The measure for any commodity is decided in line with its value. For example, iron is weighed by tonnes, fruits by kilograms, gold by grams, and diamonds by carats. But in the Hereafter deeds will be weighed by atoms. {So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.} [Surat az-Zalzalah: 7-8]

Be careful about the rights of others. If you take any person’s right unjustly, you will not be absolved of it. The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) would even probably decide some rights in favor of those who were more skillful in presenting their arguments. So, he said: “Verily, I am only a human and the claimants bring their disputes to me; perhaps some of them are more eloquent than others. I judge according to what I hear from them.

So, if I decide for anyone anything from the right of his brother, he should not take it, for indeed I thus give him a portion of fire.” [Narrated by Al-Bukhāri and Muslim]

O Allah, You are Sufficient for us! So, be with us and do not be against us and forgive us, our parents, and all Muslims!
