Al-Barr (The Beneficent)

O you needy servant, keep standing at the door of your Generous Lord, derive power and honor from the All-Mighty and All-Knowing Master, and implore Him by virtue of your obedience to Him; indeed, He is the Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

He will bestow His favors upon you. If you obey Him, He honors you, and if you neglect your duties, He shows mercy to you and gives you respite. If you turn to Him in repentance, He appreciates that, and if you commit sins and act wrongly, He conceals them for you.

Then, how could a person who tasted the sweetness of servitude to Him and love for Him ever be patient to get close to Him?! Or how could a person who found the pleasure of humble submission to Him not be wholly devoted to Him?!

If men’s love for women is so intense

that it captivates the heart and mind,

then what could the love for the Almighty Lord

do to a lover whose heart is filled with longing?!

How truthful is the one who said: “By Allah, how desolate a path is if Allah does not secure one, and how misguiding a path is if Allah is not the one guiding him!”

Glory be to Allah, the Beneficent, the Most Merciful! His benevolence, beneficence, and blessings of every type, apparent and hidden, encompass all the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, at every moment.

Allah Almighty says: {...and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and hidden...} [Surat Luqmān: 20] Praising His sublime essence, Allah Almighty says: {...Indeed, it is He Who is the Beneficent, the Most Merciful.} [Surat at-Tūr: 28]

Our Lord, Exalted be He, is Compassionate, Merciful, and Kind to His servants, and He sets aright their worldly and religious conditions and affairs.

Out of His perfect beneficence, He multiplies the reward for those who do good and pardons and forgives evildoers.

Our Lord, Who is Beneficent and Kind to His servants, intends ease for them, not hardship.

And He is Beneficent to His close servants as He has chosen them for His worship and singled them out for His protection and removal of all kinds of evils, harms, and adversities.

His vast beneficence manifests in what He has prepared for His pious servants in the Hereafter: {Indeed, we used to supplicate Him before. Indeed, it is He Who is the Beneficent, the Most Merciful.} [Surat at-Tūr: 28]

His beneficence is represented by the great blessings He bestows

upon His servants and the kindness He shows to them.

Beneficence is both an attribute in Him

and is shown in His actions.

He is a Beneficent God,

and He constantly does acts of beneficence to His servants.

Allah Almighty is Kind, Compassionate, and Beneficent to His servants and He bestows ample favors and bounties upon them and appreciates their good deeds and answers their supplications. {...and amply bestowed upon you His favors, [both] apparent and hidden...} [Surat Luqmān: 20]

They are all appointed to serve you..

The angels who carry the Throne invoke Allah’s forgiveness upon you.

And the angels appointed to protect you and those charged with rain and plants do all work for your benefit and sustenance.

Planets are subject and subservient, running in their orbits, and the sun, the moon, and the stars are all subject to serve us and they move in a way that enables us to calculate our times.

Moreover, the entire lower world is subject to us. The land, the mountains, the seas, the trees, the fruits, the plants, and the animals - everything therein is for us. {And He has subjected to you all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth - all from Him. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reflect.} [Surat al-Jāthiyah: 13]

The kindness of the Beneficent Lord..

Out of His beneficence, Allah Almighty facilitated for us the path to Him. He sent down His Shariah and made it easy and free from undue restrictions or hardships. He does not charge us with things beyond our capacity. {...And He has not placed upon you in the religion any hardship...} [Surat al-Hajj: 78] {Allah does not charge a soul except with that within its capacity...} [Surat al-Baqarah: 286] {And We have certainly made the Qur’an easy for remembrance; is there anyone to take heed?} [Surat al-Qamar: 17]

Out of His beneficence, Allah Almighty accepts from us what is little and gives ample rewards for it, and He forgives a lot of sins. Sufficient for us is this Hadīth in which the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, Allah wrote down the good deeds and the bad ones and then made this clear:

He who intends a good deed and does not do it, Allah writes it down as a full good deed, but if he intends it and does it, Allah writes it down as ten good deeds, or up to seven hundred times or many times over.

And if he intends a sin and does not do it, Allah writes it down as a full good deed, and if he intends it and does it, Allah writes it down as one sin.” [Narrated by Al-Bukhāri and Muslim]

A sign of Allah’s beneficence to His servants is that He becomes pleased when a servant repents to Him, and when we sin, He does not expose us. Rather, He keeps the doors of repentance wide open for us. {Say: “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, He is the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.”} [Surat az-Zumar: 53]

The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) is authentically reported to have said: “Allah Almighty said: ‘O son of Adam, if you supplicate Me and implore Me, I will forgive the sins you committed, and I do not mind.

O son of Adam, if your sins reach the clouds in the sky and then you ask Me for forgiveness, I will forgive you, and I do not mind.

O son of Adam, if you come to Me with sins as great as the earth and then you meet Me while not associating any partners with Me, I shall bring you forgiveness as great as it is.’” [Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi; Sahīh (authentic)]

All praise is to due to You, our Lord, though I cannot extend enough praise to You.

Due to You is praise that is good and so great that it fills the horizons. My Lord, cover me with Your mercy, You are Beneficent to all creation.

Your share in this name..

Our Lord is Beneficent and He loves beneficence and commands His servants to be beneficent.

In a comprehensive verse, Allah Almighty says: {It is not righteousness to turn your faces towards the east or the west, but righteousness is to believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Scriptures, and the prophets; and to give charity out of one’s cherished wealth to relatives, orphans, the needy, the wayfarer, beggars, and to free slaves; to establish prayer and give Zakah; to fulfill the ratified pledges; to be patient at times of hardship, adversity, and during the battle. Such are the true believers, and such are the righteous.} [Surat al-Baqarah: 177]

A person cannot attain the beneficence of Allah Almighty in the Hereafter except if he follows the path leading to His beneficence and pleasure. Allah Almighty says: {You will never attain righteousness until you spend in charity from what you love. Whatever you spend, Allah is All-Knowing of it.} [Surat Ᾱl ‘Imrān: 92]

Al-Rāzi (may Allah have mercy upon him) said: “Whoever facilitates for people the means of welfare and comfort in this world, Allah will facilitate for him the means of welfare in this world and in the Hereafter.”

O Allah, bestow Your favor upon us and save us from the punishment of Hellfire; indeed, You are the Beneficent, the Most Merciful!
