An-Nasīr (the Helper)

The Prophet’s Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did not like the terms of the Hudaybiyah Treaty.

‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “I came to the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) and said: ‘Are you not the Prophet of Allah?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ I said: ‘Are we not on the path of truth and our enemy on the path of falsehood?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ I said: ‘So, why would we act humbly with regard to our religion?’

Thereupon, he (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I am the Messenger of Allah; I do not disobey Him and He shall grant me victory.’” [Narrated by Al-Bukhāri - this is his wording - and Muslim]

Exalted are You Who make the truth victorious over widespread evil.

You give the rights to those to whom they are due, and Your help is the strongest and closest.

About Himself, Allah Almighty says: {...then know that Allah is your Protector. What an excellent Protector and an excellent Helper!} [Surat al-Anfāl: 40]

It is the Almighty Lord Who helps His messengers, prophets, and pious servants and supports them against their enemies in this world and on the Day of Judgment. Allah Almighty says: {We will surely help Our messengers and those who believe in the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will come forward.} [Surat Ghāfir: 51]

Our Lord is the One Who helps the vulnerable and saves the oppressed from oppression, even if they are disbelievers. Indeed, there is no true helper for them but Allah.

Allah Almighty helps the believers against their enemies, including the outside enemies such as the disbelievers and oppressors, and the inside enemies like one’s self and the devil, which are more dangerous than one’s external enemies. {As for those who strive in Our cause, We will surely guide them to Our ways, for Allah is certainly with those who do good.} [Surat al-‘Ankabūt: 69]

If help comes from Allah to anyone, he cannot be defeated; and if Allah fails someone, no one can help him. {If Allah helps you, none can overcome you...} [Surat Ᾱl ‘Imrān: 160]

Forms of help:

Allah Almighty bestows His help upon His servants in various and limitless forms and types that they do not expect.

It may take the form of sending supporting angels as Allah helped His Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions during the Battle of Badr. It may also come in the form of wind like the case of ‘Ād and the Battle of Ahzāb; or by sending birds in flocks like the case of the companions of the elephant; or by the outcry like the case of Thamūd; or by sinking into earth like the case of Qārūn; or by throwing from a high place as happened to the people of Lūt (Lot); or by the flood like the case of the people of Nūh (Noah).

The soldiers of Allah Almighty are numberless, and He shall certainly fulfill His purpose, and He is Able to do all things.

Help may sometimes come in the form of victory over the enemies, such as the victory of Sulaymān (Solomon) and Dāwūd (David) (peace be upon both of them) and the victory of Prophet Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him).

And it may also come in the form of revenge against the deniers during the prophets’ lifetime, like the people of Noah, the people of Lot, and Pharaoh; or after their death, like enabling Bukhtanasar (Nebuchadnezzar) to overcome the killers of Prophet Yahya (John the Baptist) (peace be upon him) and enabling the Romans to overpower those who had wanted to kill ‘Isa (Jesus) (peace be upon him).

Allah Almighty says: {We will surely help Our messengers and those who believe in the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will come forward.} [Surat Ghāfir: 51]

The adequate answer..

Al-Suddi said: “The prophets and the believers would be killed in worldly life although they were helped (by Allah). The people who did this to the prophets and the believers would not die until Allah send other people through whom He would take revenge for those who had been killed. Thus, the obscurity in this verse is cleared.”

There is another obscurity cited by some people regarding the verse that says: {...And Allah will never give the disbelievers a way over the believers.} [Surat an-Nisā’: 141]

There is no obscurity in this regard as far as the Hereafter is concerned.

But with regard to worldly life, the answer is as Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy upon him) said: “If their faith weakens, their enemies get a way against them in proportion to the decrease in their faith.”

Indeed, the believer is endowed with honor, dominance, help, and victory: {We will surely help Our messengers and those who believe in the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will come forward.} [Surat Ghāfir: 51]

What we see today, as the disbelievers are stronger and dominant over the believers, is due to what the Muslims did to their religion by way of adding thereto or omitting therefrom. If they repent, their faith will be complete and help will come to them from their Lord: {This is the promise of Allah. Allah never breaks His promise...} [Surat ar-Rūm: 6]

The price for help is faith, preparation, and patience. Allah Almighty says: {...For it is incumbent upon Us to help the believers.} [Surat ar-Rūm: 47] He also says: {Prepare against them whatever force you can...} [Surat al-Anfāl: 60] And He says: {...But if you keep patient and fear Allah, their schemes will not harm you in the least...} [Surat Ᾱl ‘Imrān: 120] And the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: “... And victory comes with patience.” [Narrated by Ahmad; Sahīh (authentic)]

Thereupon, help comes down from Allah, the Supporter, the Helper, Who says: {...Victory only comes from Allah, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.} [Surat Ᾱl ‘Imrān: 126] He also says: {If Allah helps you, none can overcome you...} [Surat Ᾱl ‘Imrān: 160]

If Allah is with you, who could stand against you?!

And if He is against you, who could help you?!

Whoever resorts to Allah Almighty, He will give him sufficiency and elevate his status: {...And hold fast to Allah, for He is your Protector; what an excellent Protector and an excellent Helper!} [Surat al-Hajj: 78]

Moreover, the believer loves his fellow believers and supports them even when they are distant from him in terms of place or time.

O Allah, the Helper, help us against the disbelievers.
